Sustainable Stewardship

Sustainability is a cross-functional responsibility involving everyone from all departments of our company. To be the best we are continuously improving, and recognize the importance of sustainability reporting. We see this as an exciting opportunity to report on initiatives that have been foundational at HyLife. We also see this as a tremendous opportunity for growth as we engage with our stakeholders to better understand opportunities for improvement.

The report in which you are currently engaging is step five. The first two steps are about committing to the process by building company awareness and engagement with our stakeholders to identify what matters most to them. We then integrate our findings, assess how we are doing, and set goals to improve. These five steps repeat in future reports to drive continuous improvement across the company.

Materiality Assessment

A materiality assessment is the foundation of sustainability reporting. It is the process of identifying environmental, social, and governance issues that could affect a company. These issues are then condensed into a shortlist of topics that inform a company’s sustainability goals, strategy, and reporting.

Through our stakeholder engagement survey, we were able to identify which topics are most important to our stakeholders, allowing us to adapt our sustainability strategy and goals to the areas that are most important to them. A materiality matrix is the visualization of our findings after assessing our stakeholder engagement. The matrix allows us to see what has emerged as a high priority for HyLife and our stakeholders.

The focus of our data and information reflects the reporting period of January, 1 to December 31, 2020. Our report focuses on HyLife’s operations in Canada and the United States, aiming to expand in future years to encompass all global operations.

Identify Stakeholders

Who does HyLife impact? Who impacts HyLife? This includes but is not limited to our employees, shareholders, local communities, government officials, nongovernmental organizations, customers, and regulators.

Engage our Stakeholders

After consulting with sustainability experts and companies experienced in sustainability reporting, we developed a survey encompassing a wide range of sustainability topics. The survey was then sent to HyLife’s executive management team and hundreds of others in our stakeholder groups to determine our materiality assessment.

Our Contributions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) represent an urgent call to action for all countries developed and developing to work together in a global partnership to create positive change globally. Our aim as a global food company is to use the globally recognized SDGs within our sustainability strategy to better connect with our stakeholders on the topics that matter most.
